The Chair, which has been headed by Prof. Dr. Cornelia Linde since 1 April 2020, focuses its research and teaching on the History of Europe and the Mediterranean in the medieval millennium between Late Antiquity and the Reformation. Students have the opportunity to learn the tools of medieval studies by studying a wide variety of topics, ranging from the classical themes of imperial and regional history to the history of religious institutions and intercultural exchange processes. The Chair's key fields of research include basic historical studies, cultural history and the study of medieval monasteries and orders.
As part of the cross-disciplinary Greifswald Medieval Centre, the Chair organises numerous events such as conferences and lecture series with other subjects (e.g. German Language and Literature, History of Art, Scandinavian Studies), which provide a broad insight into current research in German and international medieval studies.
