The Church of Semlow and its Baroque Interior

The work on the church of Semlow, which was also built of boulders, was finished during the early 13th century. It has an inverted choir and a church tower with a baroque rooftop, built in the 18th century. Later, the whole building was completely reconstructed by Carl Julius Milde.

The angel, which is fixed to the lectern, was also made by Elias Keßler in 1727 and was sponsored by the wealthy noble family von Behr. The inscriptions of the desk say, that the angel was also used for the baptisms; but the christening bowl got lost in the last decades. The niche graves of the Semlow aristocratic family and the wooden epitaph date back to the 18th century.

The Retable

The Stralsund sculptor Elias Keßler built the three-storey retable in 1723. His work is an example for the outstanding baroque art in Swedish-Pomerania during the 18th century. The carved picture series shows different scenes of the Reformation. Underneath, in the predella, there is a picture of the Last Supper, in front of draped cloths. Above, a crucifixion scene is attached. This scenery is framed by the figures of Moses and Aaron. On the next level, there are statues of John the Baptist, Christ and the eye of god.
